BAPTIST COLLEGES

Seven UK Baptist Colleges are members of the Baptist Union of Great Britain (BUGB): Bristol, Northern, Regent's, Scottish, South Wales, North Wales, and Spurgeon's.

The BUGB also has close ties to the International Baptist Theological Seminary in Prague, Czech Republic. Baptist Colleges prepare men and women for ministry and offer ongoing ministerial development and training once they are accredited.

They also provide training for youth ministry, lay pastors and preachers, and courses on a range of topics including Baptist history and principles, counselling, mission and pastoral care.

The College participates in the mission of God through the formation of competent, passionate, Spirit-filled and evangelical men and women for different forms of Christian ministry. There are a variety of flexible study options. Students train for Baptist ministry full-time, in student pastorates and in mission contexts. The College is affiliated to the University of Bristol which awards the degrees. All ministerial students have the opportunity to visit mission projects in the developing world as part of their learning. Other students train in Youth Work and Applied Theology often with a view to accreditation as a Youth Specialist Minister. A new course in Children and family Ministry will be launched in 2009. These courses are validated by the University of Gloucester. A well-supported Saturday Learning Programme offers opportunities for those who wish to be more effective in their local churches or prepare for local ministerial accreditation.

Spurgeon's College is the largest of the Baptist theological colleges and has trained ministers who have made a large impact both upon British churches and across the world. Its core activity is training attractive, evangelical ministers and it has always had a strong emphasis on evangelism and church planting. Today, it aims to train 'missionary ministers' who know what they are talking about when it comes to theology and are able to interpret the modern world effectively. In this sense, it is both 'classic' and 'contemporary'. It offers both church-based and college-based patterns of training (BTh and BD degrees respectively) and has a range of MA and MTh degrees that can be studied full-time, part-time, and through open learning. Degree studies can also be accessed online through Spurgeon's Online Learning. The college supervises research degrees to MPhil, PhD and DMin levels. Important opportunities exist through the Centre for Pastoral and Professional Counselling and the Centre for Continuing Development in Ministry. Spurgeon's is associated with the University of Wales and is accredited by the British Accreditation Council for Independent Higher and Further Education. As well as belonging to the Baptist Union, it is a member body of the Evangelical Alliance and of the Micah Network.
